“Arise and Shine Forth”
Youth Spectacular
Ward/Stake/Multi-Stake Overview
SPECTACULAR THEME:
2012 Mutual Theme:
“Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations” (D&C 115:5).
“If you want to give a light to others, you have to glow yourself.” ~Pres. Thomas S. Monson
Purpose: Inspire the youth to “Arise and Shine Forth” with the talents God has given each of them. Encourage them to exercise their agency to create works of art, poetry, photography, sculpture, music, essays, dance, etc. that praise Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and the restored gospel around the theme, “Arise and Shine Forth”. Include every youth on a ward/stake level and then have them participate in the Multi-Stake Youth Spectacular.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Create Synergy and Unity among the Youth
Bring the youth together to make new friends, renew old friendships and fellowship nonmembers and less active members. Become unified in both their cultural and spiritual activities. Help reach “the one” - including handicapped youth.
2. Create Energy and Self-Esteem
Give each participant the opportunity develop skills in social interaction, dance/music/visual art/drama and leadership. These activities will help them foster greater confidence and self-esteem. “...wholesome recreation is the friend and steadying companion of work. Music, literature, art, dance, drama, athletics—all can provide entertainment to enrich one’s life and further consecrate it.”
— Reflections on a Consecrated Life, Elder D. Todd Christofferson
3. Strengthen Testimonies and Encourage Temple/Mission Preparation
Help the youth realize they are not alone in upholding high moral standards. Help them feel a part of a strong, progressive organization they are helping to build through their hard work and testimonies. Recognize the Spirit in virtuous activities and how these positive activities and standards prepare us for the Temple.
4. Praise the Lord through the Arts
Allow the youth to let their light shine and glorify God by praising him through developing and sharing their talents and testimonies with their peers, neighbors and families. Help them recognize their “gifts”. “….remember that every good *gift cometh of Christ” (footnote 18 b *talent - Moroni 10:18).
Spectacular Overview
Key Elements for Success (modified by Amy English based on info from Floyd & Claire Rigby)
Strive to involve every youth in the Ward/Stake (active, inactive, and not of our faith) in the following areas:
1- Provide a forum for the exceptional talents of our youth as they join their hearts, talents and voices to praise Heavenly Father & Jesus by “Arising and Shining Forth” that their light may be a standard for the community and nations.
2- Involve the youth in learning the assigned songs. This music will raise their hearts and self esteem. The sacred music will bless them and encourage them to do what is right when they make future choices. The opportunity to sing together will promote new associations and unite them.
3- Involve them in the dance routines. They will have fun, learn new talents and feel growth and happiness. This will unite them and give them something positive to do as friends, and at future activities.
4- Encourage each youth on a ward level to submit a cultural arts project in one of the areas of: • Art (Drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, etc.) • Drama/Speech (performance or scripts) • Handicraft (Leather tooling, cross stitch, quilting, etc.) • Music composition or music performance • Short film/video–centered on theme or gospel principle • Writing (Essay, article, story, poetry, etc.) • Other
5- All talents and cultural art displays are to focus on the theme “Arise & Shine Forth” *It would be ideal to notify the youth as soon as possible about the displays so they can begin to prepare their projects.
6- Teach the music and dances and on mutual activity nights. Schedule your practices early and get them to your YM/YW Presidents.
7- Displays of the youth cultural art projects will be displayed in the concourse/ hallway area of the Burns Arena during the Multi-Stake Youth Spectacular. Each ward will be responsible for a table/display/exhibit featuring their youth’s projects.
8- Wards and stakes encourage youth to submit their entries to the Church History Museum Art Competition and Create.LDS.org (Get Involved: Photos, Get Involved: Video, Get Involved: Audio or Get Involved: Music.)
9- Calendar the Spectacular practices and events on your Stake calendar so there are no conflicts and include the Spectacular in your budget for 2012.
Art Competition Invites Youth to Shine
The Church History Museum invites youth ages 13 to 18 to participate in its first International Art Competition for Youth. Artists should create works that express what it means to “arise and shine forth” (see D&C 115:4–6). Artwork must have been created after January 1, 2009. Entrants must be 13 by January 1, 2012, and can submit one work of art online from January 2, 2012, until the deadline—Friday, June 1, 2012. The maximum size is 84 inches (213 cm) in the longest dimension. All artistic media and styles are welcome in the competition. Submission information will be available at lds.org/youthartcomp. Winners will be asked to send their original art to the museum to be shown in the exhibit from November 16, 2012, through June 17, 2013.
See Create.LDS.org for submission rules for photos, video, audio or music.
Volunteers Can Build Church Media Library Online
Create.LDS.org, recently launched on LDS.org, details the current media needs of the Church—as well as announces contests or casting opportunities—and invites members to share their talents to fill those Church media needs. The photo and video sections of the Create site are ready to explore. The other sections (music, audio, design, and scripts) will be completed in the coming months. The new create.LDS.org website is a companion to the recently launched volunteer site, vineyard.LDS.org.
Create.LDS.org Invites Members to Contribute Music and Other Audio Material The Church has invited members to submit high-quality music and other audio files to create.lds.org, for use on Mormon Channel Radio and in other Church media products. Members can submit their files to Get Involved: Audio or Get Involved: Music.
Get Involved: Audio - …amateurs can contribute too. One option—and an immediate need—is to submit a recording of one’s testimony, which should focus on one element or specific principle of the gospel. There is no limit on the number of submissions any person can make. Regardless of whether the audio material is submitted by a professional or an amateur, files should be submitted online in the preferred format listed on the Audio Standards page.
“This is a great opportunity for members because they can share their testimonies and experiences with the world,” said Ashton Smith, a producer for the Media Services Department. Other audio records can be about momentous life experiences, conversion stories, answers to prayer, personal revelation, family traditions, favorite scriptures, and thoughts about earth and nature. These and other ongoing and immediate needs are highlighted on the Audio Needs section of create.lds.org.
Get Involved: Music - In addition to audio voice recordings, the Church needs digital music files of professional or near-professional quality to use on Mormon Channel Radio and the LDS Media Library.
Musicians can submit high-quality instrumental or vocal underscore music, recordings of children singing, recordings of hymns, and recordings of original works.
“People can be touched very sincerely by music. This is a great opportunity for people to share their talents and touch people around the world,” said Anthony Park, a producer for the Media Services Department.
Currently, create.lds.org is able to accept arrangements of vocal and instrumental performances of music from a list of public domain hymns from the Church Hymns book or the list of public domain songs from the Children’s Songbook. Members can also contribute original music—either instrumental or vocal underscore—that they have
Contributors are encouraged to submit new arrangements of hymns, original compositions, and any other uplifting music. Those interested in submitting sheet music can find more information under the Church Music section of LDS.org.
